George Stoneman Carte de Visite, circa 1862. 2.5" x 4". A bust portrait of Stoneman, a veteran of the Cortina Wars, published by Brady. On verso, "Genl. Stoneman" is written in pencil above the back stamp reading "Brady's National Portrait Galleries, Broadway & Tenth Street, New York & No. 352 Pennsylvania Av. Washington D.C." Slight wear around edges.




More Information:

In the winter of 1859, Captain George Stoneman moved his U.S. 2nd Cavalry near Brownsville, Texas, in search of Juan Cortina and his followers. On December 17, Major Samuel Heintzelman ordered Stoneman to move his men to Las Norias in search of Cortina, but to no avail. Later, on December 27, 1859, Stoneman, united with the forces of Major Rip Ford, Captain William Tobin, and Major Heintzelman, to decisively defeat Cortina's forces at the Battle of Rio Grande City.
