    Description

    Berenice Abbott (American, 1898-1991).
    Lead Belly
    Gelatin silver print
    8" x 10"
    [New York]; circa 1940s

Unsigned but stamped on verso with Abbott's Commerce Street address. An image of blues legend Huddie William Ledbetter, aka "Lead Belly", playing a guitar.

Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter was an American blues player and social activist. Although his instrument of choice was the 12-string guitar, he also played the harmonica, piano, violin, and mandolin. His influence was felt most broadly after his death. The Weavers, with Pete Seeger, covered Lead Belly's songs and exposed his music to wider audiences. In 1988, Lead Belly was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Berenice Abbott was a photographer from Ohio. She studied at Ohio State University until 1918, and then moved to Paris to continue her sculpture degree. Abbott is best known for her images of New York City architecture and for her portraits of cultural figures during the period between WWI and WWII.

Condition: Light edge wear and soiling, else very good.
