Abraham Lincoln: "Tousled Hair" Albumen Reprint or Copy Image by Ayres. O-2, taken by Alexander Hesler in Chicago on February 28, 1857. The end product did not please Mrs. Lincoln, but was used as a basis on prints and ribbons in the presidential campaign of 1860. It measures 6" x 8" [sight] and has not been examined out of the frame. There is a specially-cut window on the back of the frame revealing an extensive pencil inscription plus a period ink inscription reading "Copyright Geo. B. Ayres Phila." The pencil caption says newspaperman Joseph Medill accompanied Lincoln to the studio and that several law colleagues wanted images of Lincoln, though Lincoln claimed not to know why anyone would want pictures of such a homely face. Hesler groomed Lincoln's hair, but Lincoln didn't like the look and ran his fingers through his hair, fussing it up. The caption is 7" across, but it's a logical assumption this is the standard 7" x 9" size used by Ayres for most of his reprints. This is much rarer than the Ayres reprints of O-26 and O-27. We have never seen an original dating from 1857. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.
