"Bloody Bill" Anderson: A Vintage Copy Image, with Tribute Inscription in Harry Hoffman's Hand on Verso. Perhaps the best known image of Anderson. Written in faded ink in the lower left-hand corner (not in Hoffman's hand) is "Bill Anderson / The Symbol of all that Men Hold Dear / Aug. 7th, 1920."

Harry Hoffman added this inscription in pencil on the back, below which he copies the text from the front; "Bill Anderson Second in Command Quantrill's Brigade 1860 to 1865 - Killed Near Richmond, Missouri 1865 by Federal Soldiers in Guerilla uniform."

It is illuminating how revered Anderson was by this close James associate, more than a half-century after his death. 7.75" x 11.25" as framed. Included with the lot is a 1948 letter of transmittal from Hoffman to Frank Foster, who purchased his James collection, sending him this photo of Anderson, "who happened to be a cousin of mine." He recommends that Foster read Jesse James, Jr.'s book, Jesse James My Father, to "get an idea of the kind of fighter Capt. Bill was - Kansans hate his insides."
