Collection of Rare Early 1880s Stereoviews by W.R. Cross, Including Three Important Sitting Bull Images. For nearly two years after his July 19, 1881, surrender at Fort Buford, Sitting Bull was held as a prisoner of war at Fort Randall in Dakota Territory (in May of 1883, he was allowed to rejoin his people at Standing Rock). These photos, dating from that time span, include "Sitting Bull and his Favorite Squaw", "Sitting Bull and Squaw and twin papooses" and "Sitting Bull's Camp, Summerview, Prisoners of War, Fort Randall, Dakota Territory". These images lack the "staged" quality of most familiar Sitting Bull photographs, and give a much better sense of the man and how he lived during the Fort Randall period. Other stereoviews include, "Battalion 25th Infantry at Fort Randall", "Dakota Territory" and several interior & exterior views of what may have been the commandant's home at Fort Randall. One very interesting uncaptioned card appears to show Steps, the famous Nez Perce who lost his feet as a result of being trapped in a blizzard. The Sioux saved him, and after recovering he was a well-known figure in their camp through the Standing Rock era. Each stereoview measures 6.75" x 3.75", and is in exceptional near-mint condition.
