    Description

Albumen Stereoview: Custer Scout Bloody Knife Circa 1870. Scarce view of Bloody Knife atop his pony wearing his U.S. Army issue jacket and pants with private stripe, moccasins, and cartridge belt. He is pointing his tacked Winchester. He was Custer's favorite scout, and guided the 7th Cavalry through the Black Hills during the 1874 Expedition, and again during the 1876 campaign. He reportedly told Custer to retreat as there were too many Indians June 25, 1876-a suggestion that Custer fatefully ignored. Custer ordered Bloody Knife to leave, yet he stayed and was later shot in the head while advising Major Reno during his skirmish at his Little Bighorn crossing. From the estate collection of E.F. Mueller.
