Sixth-Plate Daguerreotype of General Robert Patterson, circa 1846. 3" x 3.5". A detailed bust portrait of Patterson, in uniform, tinted to accentuate the buttons, staring sternly into the camera. Portrait is mounted in a leatherette case that is lined with red fabric and ink marking "R.P." Case has moderate scuffing with working clasp.

Robert Patterson (1792-1881), a native of Ireland, joined the U.S. Army during the War of 1812, rising to the rank of captain. He was commissioned a major general during the Mexican War, seeing action at the Siege of Vera Cruz and the Battle of Cerro Gordo. Patterson often employed the Texas Rangers under Col. John Coffee "Jack" Hays as a counter against Mexican guerillas. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Patterson scored an early victory for the Union, but his inability to hold General Joseph E. Johnston in the Shenandoah Valley led, indirectly, to the Federal defeat at First Manassas. He was honorably discharged shortly thereafter, ending his military career.
