    Description

Sioux Leader Chief Gall: A Fine Nineteenth Century D. F. Barry Photograph. A 5" x 7" sepia photograph of him seated, dressed in leather-fringed coat and pants, and wearing a large silver cross around his neck. Barry's blind stamp is found on the front and his Superior, Wisconsin, label is found on the verso along with a pencil notation: "Chief Gall". A giant of a man reportedly weighing nearly 300 pounds, Gall was a war chief of the Hunkpapa Lakota who served as one of Sitting Bull's lieutenants at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Chief Gall's two wives and several children were killed during Major Reno's initial assault on the Indian camp and he played a major tactical role in Custer's defeat that day. After the battle, his group joined Sitting Bull in taking refuge in Canada, but Gall became disillusioned with Sitting Bull and brought his band back into the United States in 1880, finally surrendering the following year. He lived out his life at Standing Rock Reservation, dying in 1894. Photo is in fine condition with excellent detail and contrast.
