    Signed and dated in negative at lower right corner. Marked in pencil on verso "5209-D" and stamped "G. G. G. Photo Studio". A portrait of a well-dressed young man, seated at a piano in a small living room.

    James Van Der Zee was best known for his photography of black New Yorkers. The African-American photographer began his career as a darkroom assistant in 1915, but opened his own studio in Harlem the next year. Throughout World War I his business blossomed, and following the war, he produced hundreds of portraits of Harlem's expanding middle class population. Some of his more famous subjects were Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Joe Louis, Florence Mills, Countee Cullen, and Marcus Garvey.

    Condition: Edges of margins are chipped, and corners are bumped. Faint concentric rings are visible on the surface under raking light. Else good.
