    Miles Davis, Royal Festival Hall;
    Gelatin silver print, printed later
    Image: 17.25" x 13"
    Mount: 28" x 22"
    London; 1989

    Signed, titled, and dated in pencil at the lower mount margin. A close-up image of the musician, with a keyboard reflected in his dark glasses.

    One of the most influential Jazz musicians who ever lived, Miles Davis was on the forefront of numerous musical developments and movements during his roughly 50-year career, including hard bop, cool jazz, modal music, fusion, and free jazz. Davis performed his final British concert at the Royal Festival Hall just two years after this photograph was taken. Herman Leonard graduated from Ohio University and became apprentice to Yousuf Karsh in Ottawa, Canada. Later, his interest in the jazz scene took him to New York, where he established his own studio and shot publicity portraits for up and coming jazz musicians. Among some of his subjects were Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Quincy Jones.

    Condition: Excellent condition.
