    Description

    Flip Schulke (American, 1930-2008).
    Ali Underwater, 1961
    Gelatin silver, printed later
    16" x 20"

A striking image of a young Muhammad Ali, then Cassius Clay, posed underwater in the Sir John Hotel pool in Miami. Ali convinced Schulke to photograph him underwater, claiming that it was part of his routine resistance training. Of course, Ali was aware of Schulke's fame for taking underwater photographs and wanted to be a part of the photographer's noted body of work; resulting in one of the photographer's most iconic images.

Signed on verso by Donna Schulke and annotated "I hereby certify that this gelatin silver print was made from the original, printed during the artist's lifetime and under his supervision by Modervega, NYC. Donna Schulke".

Flip Schulke was a freelance photographer and worked for Life magazine, along with numerous other national and international publishers. He formed a close friendship with Martin Luther King Jr. around 1958, and subsequently began photographing and documenting the Civil Rights Movement. Along with thousands of pictures of King and his family and key moments in the civil rights movement, Schulke took iconic images of President Kennedy, Muhammad Ali, and numerous astronauts during the early days of NASA.

Condition: Very good condition, with only trivial wear.
