[Texas Rangers]. Photograph of Captain John R. Hughes and Three Texas Rangers, circa 1890, Signed on the Verso by Hughes. 8" x 10" card photograph. Pictured with Captain Hughes are Rangers Bob Speaker, Jim Putnam, and Lon Oden, all on horseback next to a creek at Bosque Bonito in the Big Bend area of South Texas. An inscription on the recto reads "Taken at Bosque Bonito 1890." Written on the verso is "Send this picture back J.R. Hughes." Tiny tears at edges and corners of card, but image remains mostly untouched. Provenance: John R. Hughes.

John Reynolds Hughes captured the attention of the Texas Rangers when he, a private citizen, independently tracked a group of thieves that had stolen several horses from his and neighboring ranches, killing many of them over the several months of his pursuit, and recovering the missing horses in the process. In 1887, the following year, Hughes joined the Rangers. Upon the death of Company "D" Captain Frank Jones in 1893, Hughes assumed the rank of captain. When the Frontier Battalion was abolished and turned into the State Rangers in 1901, Hughes was among the four captains selected for command.
