    Schuyler Colfax: Rare 1865 California Trip Carte-de-Visite [Dispatched by Lincoln]. Previously-unseen CDV of four men identified on the mount as: "Broady [?[, Bowles, Colfax, & Richardson. 'Colfax Party' 1865". Bradley & Rulofson of San Francisco back mark. Colfax was asked by President Lincoln to visit the miners of California. This was done on the day of his assassination, April 14, 1865. The Speaker of the House traveled by train, horse and coach to California, giving a speech at Colfax, named in his honor. His trip helped give impetus to the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad.
