Robert E. Lee: Unusual Variant of the "Military Medallion" Carte-de-Visite [CDV] by Rockwell & Cowell, after Rees. "Genl. R. E. Lee and Staff. The Military Medallion". Affixed to coated stock mount with Rockwell & Cowell credit dated 1866 and back mark "Rockwell & Cowell, Photographers. Petersburg, Va." This is their original version with the photograph of Major Giles B. Cooke in the 8 o'clock position. Discoloration to mount, as is often seen on coated stock. Paper remnants and wear to verso, affecting the readability of the imprint. The Rees Gallery suffered fire damage on several occasions at their Sycamore Street location. The original negative of the "Military Medallion" was the only one of their old negatives they were able to save, according to descendents of the photographers.
From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.
