    Description

Robert E. Lee: Pair of "Military Medallion" Albumens. 10" x 12" albumen, affixed to a mount cut to an oval shape, titled "Genl. R. E. Lee and Staff. The Military Medallion." Each officer is identified in small print below the portrait. First published in Petersburg, Virginia circa 1865. This has dual Rockwell & Cowell photographer's credits and is dated 1866. One faint, oblique scratch across the center, seen only at an angle, and of little import. Sold together with a smaller version of the same, affixed to an 8" x 10" mount with paper label of N. S. Tanner of Lynchburg, Virginia, and a copyright date of 1867. A Tanner & Van Ness of Lynchburg paper label appears on the verso. This is a slight variation of the Rockwell & Cowell product, as the portrait of Major Giles B. Cooke has been replaced by one of General George H. Steuart who was with Lee at Appomattox. This switch may been been a ploy to skirt copyright issues.
From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
