    Description

Robert E. Lee: Nine Cartes-de-Visite [CDV]. 1) "Unbuttoned coat in-the-field" vignetted salt print portrait with light retouching on coated stock mount. Originally taken by Minnis & Cowell near Fredericksburg in 1863. One small stain. The unusual mount points towards a Confederate war-time product. 2) "Unbuttoned coat in-the-field" copy-image by border state photographer. The Monumental Photograph Company of Baltimore back mark. Captioned "General R. E. Lee, C.S.A." It is similar to photographs of Confederate generals produced by this photographer during the war. Excellent clarity, showing more of the subject than normally seen. 3) Retouched, vignetted copy-image of Lee with E. & H. T. Anthony back mark (a very unusual Anthony back mark, oval in shape with gold border). Identified in pencil on the albumen "Genl. R. E. Lee". 4) Similar to #3. Brady credit (trimmed) with Anthony/Brady back mark and gold rule border. 5) Similar to #3, but showing more of the subject and lacking Brady credit. 6) Similar to #3, but copied from an engraving. S. H. Colesworthy of Portland, Maine back mark. 7) Oval photograph of Lee copied from a lithograph, affixed to an embossed CDV mount advertising Albert Leavers' Dry Goods Store in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Clipped corners, trimmed at bottom. 8) 1 1/8" x 1 5/8" salt print of Lee after the Vannerson "blockade" portrait, affixed to a plain, but unusual CDV mount (smooth on the front, textured on the back). Rounded corners. A fine example of a rare photograph produced in the Confederacy during the war. 9) Post-war vignetted "blockade" portrait. Bold, sharp image. Unmarked, but marketed by Vannerson & Jones of Richmond in the aftermath of the war.
From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.
