    Description

Robert E. Lee: Mounted Albumen by Vannerson Plus Edward Valentine's Personal Copy of the Standard Variety of the Same Pose. 1) 8" x 10" silver gelatine print of Vannerson's 1863 "blockade" portrait, inscribed below: "Gen Lee sat for this picture during the war. It was made for me. I prefer it to to all other photographs of him. Edward V. Valentine". This is a fine 2nd generation copy made from the original negative by George Cook of Richmond. The photograph was "commissioned" by Valentine for use as a model for his sculpture to be sold in England to benefit Confederate prisoners-of-war. 2) 4" x 6" cabinet-size albumen of a rare variation of the same pose affixed to an 8" x 10" board with 1891 unsigned presentation inscription on verso (scattered foxing and loss to one corner). This pose was taken at the same time as the previous image, but the angle of the sword is different. This collection also contains a CDV version. This particular pose was probably not widely marketed due to its soft focus. Up until very recently, it was not recognized as a distinctly different pose.
From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.
