    Description

Robert E. Lee and Joseph E. Johnston Carte de Visite. Measuring 2.5" x 4" and affixed to a D.J. Ryan, Savannah, Georgia, mount, the two leading generals of the Confederate Army are seen sitting at a table. Johnston appears at left and Lee on the right with pen in hand. The photograph was taken in Savannah sometime in the spring of 1870 at Ryan's photograph studio. Lee, whose health was failing, was on a tour of the South when he visited Johnston -- the first time the two men had seen each other since the war. Johnston, who was living in Savannah at the time, was working in insurance. Lee died in October of that same year. Scattered light foxing, else fine.
