    Description

Robert Anderson Carte de Visite Signed Twice.
2.5" x 4", on a Brady, New York mount. A full standing portrait of Union officer Anderson, seen standing in uniform with him arms folded and holding his forage cap at his side. Signed "Robert Anderson" on the mount and on verso reads, "For my sweet little friend 'Daisy' Robert Anderson New York Nov 1. 1861." Robert Anderson (1805-1871) was in command at Fort Sumter and was forced to surrender following the Confederate's bombardment of the fort in April 1861. Anderson's defense of the fort made him a national hero, and he was promoted to brigadier general. He then set about aiding with recruitment and toured the country for a period of time before briefly becoming the commanding officer at Fort Adams in Newport, Rhode Island in 1863. Anderson officially retired from the Army on October 27, 1863. After Lee's surrender at Appomattox, Anderson was invited to raise the 33-star American flag at Fort Sumter once more. Tragically, President Lincoln was assassinated just hours after the ceremony. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Light toning and foxing throughout. Corners and edges show signs of wear and soiling. Further foxing on verso, else good.
