Quarter-Plate Post Mortem Image of Drummer Boy Cased quarter plate (3.25" x 4.25") photographs of a young boy in civilian dress and the same boy, dressed in uniform, laid out on a military cot with his drum resting on the ground. The first image, appearing on the left side of the thermoplastic case ("Cupid and the Wounded Stag" Krainik-36) is a hand-tined ambrotype of the smiling boy standing alongside a chair (some bubbling of the emulsion on the boy's coat). The facing image is a hand-painted tintype that shows the person - now a young man in a post-mortem view. The tintype image is somewhat dark with fair contrast, but quite discernible. A very poignant artifact.
