Quarter Plate Cased Daguerreotype of California "Gold Miner" Standing with Prominent Western Gold Rush Gentlemen ca. 1850s. Great cased daguerreotype is of a miner with a typical mining shirt and wide brim hat, he also has two-piece gilded eagle belt buckle on leather belt. The miner is shaking hands with what appears to be a very prominent gentleman from California. The gentleman has a gold watch fob with a large gold nugget hanging on the end. On the inner case printed on velvet, "R. H. Vance Premium Daguerrean Galleries, San Francisco, Sacramento & Marysville". The seal is broken. Case is separated, otherwise excellent. Measures approximately 3.25" x 4.25".

These rare daguerreotypes taken in the 1850s by both known and unknown makers portray the men and women through untold tales of those that went west to seek their golden fortunes. These Images preserve the expressions of hope and uncertainty in this unforgiving land.

Very fine, great contrast, light scratches from cleaning.
