    Description

Quantrill's Guerillas: A Great 1920 Reunion Photograph, with Grizzled Veterans Posed with Harry Hoffman and Jesse James, Jr. This reunion took place at the home of Miss Lizzy Wallace at Wallace Grove, Missouri, and she is shown standing at the top of the picture. Miss Wallace was from an old Jackson County, Missouri, pioneer family and a relation of Bess (Mrs. Harry) Truman. Hoffman has added identification slips below the pictures of himself and lifelong friend Jesse James, Jr. A contemporary article in the Kansas City Star mentions that there were "Eleven at the Quantrill Rally" and that "Each year the number grows smaller. 15 were present last year." It goes on to say "Also present yesterday were Jesse James, Jr., son of the famous outlaw, [and] Harvey C. Hoffman..."

The affecting image illustrates Harry Hoffman's close personal identification with James/ Quantrill history and helps to explain his motivation in collecting related artifacts and relics. This print of the photo was obtained by Harry for Frank Foster, who eventually purchased Hoffman's collection. This photos is rare because it is a print from the original negative, and not just a second generation copy. 12" x 14.5" as framed.
