    Description

    P. E. Larson "Nixon Block Goldfield, Nev." Photograph. 9.5" x 7.5". This image shows mining men gathered around the stock exchange on the Nixon Block during the miners strike in 1907. Federal troops had been sent to Goldfield by Governor John Sparks to quell the riots and violence between miners and mine owners. The block was named for George Nixon, a politician and one of an important Nevada mining man. In the lower right corner is written, "Larson Pho 4069." Minor fading along some edges. The verso is blank.

    More Information:

    P. E. Larson followed several gold rushes to capitalize on the frenzy they brought about in the lives of miners, their families, and local businesses. He wanted to memorialize the endeavors of these hardworking people, so he opened his first studio in Cripple Creek, Colorado, in 1896. Two years later he went to the Klondike and opened a studio in Dawson City. He then followed the new gold rush to Goldfield, Nevada, opening his Palm Studio in that desert town. Following his move to Goldfield, he changed his last name from Larss to Larson to give it a more western flavor. In Goldfield, he established himself and became one of the greatest and most famous western artists in the history of the American West.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
