    Description

Oliver O. Howard Carte de Visite Signed "O.O. Howard Brig. Genl Vols." 2.5" x 4", on a Mathew Brady, Washington, D.C. mount. Howard poses in a three-quarter-length portrait, in uniform, arms folded across his chest and with his saber hanging at his waist. Signed on the mount below the albumen.

Oliver O. Howard (1830-1909), known as "The Christian General" for his piety, saw action at First Bull Run, Fair Oaks (where he lost his right arm and for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor), Antietam, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, and Sherman's March to the Sea. After the war, he directed the Freedman's Bureau, where he strongly advocated for land and voter's rights for former slaves. In 1867, he founded and served as first President of Howard University (1869-1874). From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Uneven toning throughout, with wear at the mount corners. A few spots of soiling and imperfections throughout the albumen, which do not affect the overall appearance of the portrait.
