Three Early Albumen Views of Kelly, New Mexico, by E. A. Bass, Socorro, New Mexico, all 5" x 8" overall, ca. 1880s. Each of these images is inscribed on the verso "From my brother H A Robinson (or, in one instance, Henry Robinson), with one mat additionally being imprinted by the photographer. Depicted are a mining operation from a distance, a several outlying buildings, and a wonderful town "portrait" wherein the population is lined up on the street before H. A. Robinson's general store. Inscriptions identify Robinson and his family. Of particular interest are a grizzled mountain man standing to the left of the storekeepers and, further up the street, two men on horseback. Prints intact with moderate chipping to mats, which are inscribed. Good condition. Kelly, founded about the time these photographs were taken, grew to some 3,000 souls. Zinc carbonate deposits in the area attracted the interest of the Sherwin-Williams Paint Co., which bought the town in 1904. Decline set in after 1928, resulting in yet another Western ghost town.
