The "Soapy" Smith Gang: Alaskan Photographs. Two photographs, each measuring 6.25" x 4.5", picturing the "Soapy" Smith Gang in Skagway, Alaska in 1898. The images are identified as follows by inscriptions on recto: "Gang of Soapy Smith: Skagway - 1898" and "Skagway 1898 *Rounding up the Soapy Smith Gang." Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith, was a notorious con artist and crime lord who operated in the western United States at the end of the 19th century. He was heavily involved in organized crime in Denver and Creede, Colorado, before moving to the gold rush town of Skagway, Alaska, which he unofficially ran, and routinely robbed, until his death in the infamous shootout on Juneau Wharf in 1898. Photographs mounted on black paper with photo corners. Both in excellent condition.
