Ten Press Photographs of Integration in Russia and New York.
    Integration in Russia
    Four press photographs, 9" x 7.25"
No place, circa October- December 1961

Images of Huldah Clark in Russia, showing Clark's departure to Moscow, her integration with fellow Russian students, and her return home for Christmas break. Huldah Clark was 14 when her parents sent her to get her education in Russia, believing that she would face less discrimination there than in the United States.

    Integration in New York
    Six press photographs, ranging in size from 8.5" x 6.5" to 10" x 8"
    No place; dating from 1957-1969

These black and white images show varying levels of success in the U.S.'s attempt to de-segregate schools. Some images show the registration of black and white preschoolers and the harmonious recess activities, while others show heavy police guards protecting black students entering schools and picket demonstrators demanding full integration. In one photograph, a near empty classroom shows the harsh effects of integrated classroom boycotts.

Condition: Slight wear and toning in places, else very good. Some of the photograph captions have been edited or underlined in blue or black ink.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
