    Description

Alan Shepard, the first American in space

Mercury-Redstone 3 (Freedom 7) and Alan Shepard: Collection of Fifty+ Original NASA Glossy Photos. A hard-to-match group of approximately fifty-five 8" x 10" B&W photos (one is color) that tell the complete story of America's first manned space launch and the astronaut who rode Freedom 7 into the history books on May 5, 1961. Every possible aspect of preparation for this mission is covered from the rocket testing and setup, medical tests, space suit fitting, launch, in-flight images, and mission control, to the splashdown and post-flight activities. Most photos have printed captions on the verso and are two-hole punched at top. Included is the pressboard folder from Mr. Sturtevant's collection where these have been stored for many decades. Generally very fine to excellent. From the personal collection of Gemini Program Office special assistant and longtime NASA employee, Paul M. Sturtevant.
