    Description

Large Albumen Photograph of the First New York and Battery "D" Before the Town of Fredericksburg. Measuring 16.5" x 13.5, members of the 1st N.Y. Regiment and Battery "D" are seen preparing their field pieces before the town of Fredericksburg. Behind the line of cannons stand horses and wagons. A second line of wagons and cannon appear to be coming up the road in the distance. Pencil notations at the upper and lower edges. Additional inscription on the verso identifies the scene: "Battery D, Second United States Artillery going into battle June 5, 1863. Reconnaissance Force under Sedgwick below Fredericksburg to Survey Lee's Position." On June 5, Union Gen. Joseph Hooker heard rumors of Lee's movements and sent Sedgwick across the Rappahannock River to assess the situation. In the meantime, Lee was beginning his move north. Four days later, Union Gen. Alfred Pleasanton would find Lee and engage him at Brandy Station. The Gettysburg Campaign had begun. Mount shows some wear.
