    Description

    Edward S. Curtis, Photographer: Original Photogravure Plate Envelope with Final Proof Print and Finished Vellum Photogravure "Sotsona ('Fox') - Santo Domingo" from The North American Indian. Every copper photogravure plate from The North American Indian was housed in a custom-made envelope with a final proof print on the front. This final proof was approved by Curtis before the finished photogravures were created. These are rarely offered for sale, particularly with the matching finished photogravure.

    This image was taken originally in 1925 and appeared facing page 128 in Volume 16 of The North American Indian. Proof image size is 6" x 8" on an 8.5" x 10.25" envelope. Final photogravure image size is 5.5" x 7.5" on 9.5" x 12" vellum. This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from leading Curtis expert Christopher Cardozo.
