    Description

    Edward S. Curtis, Photographer: Lot of Three Vintage Portfolio Photogravures from The North American Indian. This grouping of original prints includes the following plates, all from Volume XII:
    Plate 422 titled "Snake Dancers Entering the Plaza." Curtis' caption: "At the right stand the Antelopes, in front of the booth containing the snake-jars. The Snakes enter the plaza, encircle it four times with military tread, and then after a series of songs remarkable for their irresistible movement, they proceed to dance with the reptiles." The photo date is 1921 and this original photogravure was produced in Cambridge, Massachusetts by Suffolk Engraving Co. Plate size is approximately 17.25" x 13.75" on a 22" x 18" Holland Van Gelder sheet.
    Plate 429 titled "A Walpi Snake Priest." Curtis' caption: "This subject is Koyawaima ("gray [dawn] walking"), who has been chief of the fraternity since 1899." The photo date is 1900 and this original photogravure was produced in Cambridge, Massachusetts by Suffolk Engraving Co. Plate size is approximately 13" x 17.75" on an 18" x 22" Holland Van Gelder sheet.
    Plate 435 titled "The Water Carriers." The photo date is 1921 and this original photogravure was produced in Cambridge, Massachusetts by Suffolk Engraving Co. Plate size is approximately 17" x 13.75" on a 22" x 18" Holland Van Gelder sheet.
    Also included is a very poor condition example of Plate 105 titled "The Wood Gatherer - Sioux" from Volume III, trimmed to 15" x 17"..
    Condition: Light to medium tissue burn, overall very good (unless noted).
