    Description

Edward S. Curtis, Photographer: Hopi "Piki Maker" Vintage Orotone in Original Frame. Image size 8" x 10". Frame size: 11.5" x 13.5". This beautiful goldtone is signed, "Curtis" in the negative at lower right corner. Taken in 1906, the image appeared originally in photogravure as Portfolio Plate No. 432 in Volume Twelve of The North American Indian. Curtis's caption reads: "Piki is cornbread baked in colored sheets of paper-like thinness. The batter is spread on the baking stone with the bare hand, and the quickly baked sheet is folded and laid on the basket at the baker's left." Image in excellent condition. Frame has chips and cracks with damage at lower left corner.

Goldtone, or Orotone, is a printing process pioneered by Curtis, and his favored method of producing images. Images are printed directly on glass and backed with golden metallic particles. The end result has a luminosity and three-dimensionality not found in any other medium.
