Edward S. Curtis, Photographer: "At the Old Well of Acoma" Vintage Goldtone in Original Frame. This originally was one of Curtis' most popular, important and widely collected images. Image size (sight): 13.375" x 10.375". Frame size: 18.75" x 15.75". This beautiful goldtone was created circa 1904. Signed, "Curtis" in the negative at lower left corner. Partial original image description studio sticker at upper left on verso, "The Old Well of Acoma". Original studio sticker at lower right on verso, "Curtis Home of the Curtis Indians At Home and Studio Portraiture The Curtis Studio Seattle Wash., U.S.A."

The beautiful subject matter, the lyrical qualities of the water, and the ripples, and the strong composition have made this an enduring image. It remains as sought-after today as it was 100+ years ago. This photograph was made near the Pueblo of Acoma, in New Mexico, in 1904. It appeared in photogravure as Portfolio Plate No. 571 in Volume 16 of The North American Indian. Curtis' caption reads: "Members of Coronado's army of explorers in 1540 and espejo in 1583 noted the 'cisterns to collect snow and water' on the rock of Acoma."

Goldtone, or Orotone, is a printing process pioneered by Curtis, and his favored method of producing images. Images are printed directly on glass and backed with golden metallic particles. The end result has a luminosity and three-dimensionality not found in any other medium.

Overall fine to excellent condition with minor gold-backing and emulsion anomalies, not uncommon with vintage Curtis goldtones. Beautifully presented in excellent original frame. This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from leading Curtis expert Christopher Cardozo.

Please note: Another example of this Orotone recently sold (October 4, 2012) at Swann Auction Galleries for $28,800 (Sale 2288, Lot 23).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
