Edward S. Curtis Original Portfolio Photogravure "Tolowa Dancing Head-Dress" Plate 455 on Japanese Rice Tissue mounted on vellum, copyright 1923. Original image size 15.25" x 12" with the plate number at upper left, title at lower left, and captioned at the bottom "From Copyright Photograph 1923 by E. S. Curtis" and "Photogravure Suffolk Eng. Co. Cambridge, Mass." Matted and custom framed to an overall size of 25.5" x 21.5". The Tolowa lived in the Smith River basin in Northwestern California and in Southwestern Oregon. They were photographed by Curtis and included in Volume 13 of The North American Indian where he wrote "The head dress is of a type common to the Klamath River tribes - a broad band of deerskin partially covered with a row of red scalps of the woodpecker. The massive necklace of clamshell beads indicates the wealth of the wearer, or of the friend from whom he borrowed it. He carries a ceremonial celt of black obsidian and a decorated bow." Excellent condition.
