    Description

Edward S. Curtis Original Portfolio Photogravure "A Southern Miwok" Plate 495 on Japanese Rice Tissue mounted on vellum, copyright 1924. Original image size 11.5" x 15.25" with the plate number at upper left, title at lower left, and captioned at the bottom "From Copyright Photograph 1924 by E. S. Curtis" and "Photogravure Suffolk Eng. Co. Cambridge, Mass." Matted and custom framed to an overall size of 21.5" x 25.5". The Miwok (Miwuk) lived in the Northern California and consisted of four distinct subgroups all connected by a common language. They were photographed by Curtis and included in Volume 14 of The North American Indian where he wrote, "The Miwok rarely practiced warfare, unless the word can be applied to the assassination of men believed to be sorcerers. The killing of these medicine men was a frequent occurrence, and expeditions for the purpose were sometimes made to rather distant villages within the Miwok boundaries. In fact, medicine men were so thoroughly feared that they never had any real friends, and therefore vengeance was never sought." Excellent condition.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
