DescriptionDawson, Alaska: Eight Early Circa 1898 Photos. From the family of Joseph Ladue, they depict the town and the Whisper Gold Mining Co. operations. All are equally light, and several have damage to the mounts (only) as shown. Each 6.5" x 5.375" including mount.
Joseph Ladue was a prospector and shrewd business man, the founder of Dawson City, Yukon. Seeking his fortune, he crossed into the Yukon in 1882. After the discovery of gold there in 1896, he staked his land claim, built a town, opened a sawmill, a saloon, and a store. He acquired several profitable bold claims and left there in 1897, returning home to Schuyler Falls, New York, a rich man. He died in 1900 at the age of 49.
