Barbary Coast: San Francisco Police Mug Shots. Eight leaves from a mug shot book, each page measuring 4.5" x 9", with three photos mounted on each side, for a total of 46 photos (each photo 2.5" x 3"). These photos date from the 1880's. They are identified in the negative and by marginal notations. There are two women, a handful of juvenile offenders, while the balance are male adults from young to old. The photo of John McCue was removed from the album on October 8, 1889, "Taken out by order of Chf. Crowley. Party leading an industrious and honest life & never having been convicted of any previous offense." Another photo was removed by reason of acquittal. Three criminals are listed as "Dead" including juvenile Paul Martine. Aliases are specified as well as prior convict numbers and felony designation numbers. Similar books from the same period include the photo of the highwayman "Black Bart" but, unfortunately, he is not included here. The portraits have a very "Dickensian" flavor and it doesn't take much imagination to conjure up their nefarious doings. A graphic snapshot of the notorious Barbary Coast and its denizens. Sold together with a sheaf of research material detailing the arrest records of some of the "mugs" in the album. Examples include James Ryan, a "well-known sport and ward politician", who twice-shot a police officer who had previously ejected him from a bordello; William Ward and Joseph Keyes, the "boy burglars"; Charles Abbot, a convicted murderer who was wounded in a botched prison break from Folsom Prison; James Brown, a "most brutal garrotter"; Edward Dunton, operator of a fruit stand who imprisoned and molested adolescent girls, etc.
