Description

The Bloodiest One-Day Battle in American Military History

[Abraham Lincoln]. Alexander Gardner, photographer. "President Lincoln on Battle-Field of Antietam." Washington: October, 1862. No. 23. Albumen mounted on Alexander Gardner's sketch book board mount, copyright 1866. Measures 9.125 x 11 inches (sight), and framed to an overall size of 15.5 x 17 inches.

The present image was taken on October 3, 1862 by Alexander Gardner shortly after the Battle of Antietam, considered the deadliest single-day battle in American military history. The Union suffered 12,401 casualties, while the Confederate force suffered 10,316. In this image, President Lincoln towers over George McClellan, and the other men in attendance, including the "Boy General" George Armstrong Custer who stands in front of the tent. Even though Lincoln thought it was a tactical victory, he was losing faith in McClellan's abilities as a leader, and replaced McClellan with General Ambrose Burnside several weeks later.

Condition: Albumen print has fine tone and clarity. Typical light toning to mount. Overall a fine example of this prohibitively rare image.
