    Description

Nice Quarter Plate Civil War Tintype of Federal Infantryman with Great Period ID. Wears slouch hat, very long four button fatigue blouse, and knee high boots. Hand tucked in the front of his coat Napoleonic style. Painted military backdrop. Fine quality, perfect condition in a very nice full case. The image is accompanied by a 3 1/2" X 5" ink script letter on very thin blue paper, found behind the image. The note is from John Gannon, 1st Batt. 12th U. S. infantry and addressed to his brother. Gannon states that he has "been over to headquarters today and had my picture taken." States that he thinks it "is a very good one," and asks his brother to "have yours taken and send it to me" and states that he would "prize it dearly." Contained in the note are two thread tied locks of hair, one blonde and one brown, likely Gannon and his brother. Historic image worthy of further research.
