    Description

Millard Fillmore Signed Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", with an E. Anthony imprint on verso, which states the image, was published from a photographic negative from Brady's National Portrait Gallery. A standing portrait of the 13th president, dressed in a dark suit and with his hand resting on a chair back. Signed at the lower margin, "Millard Fillmore March 6, 1862." On verso has been signed in ink, "W F Pollard 1862/B_5 No. 234." Fillmore became president when Zachary Taylor died while in office. His attempts to reach a compromise on the slavery issue made him unpopular with both sides, and he was unable to get the Whig Party's nomination to run for a full term in 1852. A later attempt to be elected president on the Know-Nothing Party ticket also failed. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Lightly toned throughout. The "F" of the signature has been slightly smudged. There is a pencil notation at the top right corner, else good.
