    Description

Medal of Honor Recipient Frank E. Brownell Carte de Visite Signed "Frank E. Brownell USA." 2.5" x 4", with a Silsbee, Case & Co. imprint on verso. A seated portrait of 1st Lt. Brownell, U.S. 11th Infantry, seen in uniform, a saber held across his lap. Pictured with a large medal pinned to his chest. Written in pencil in an unknown hand on verso is "May 24, 1861 Ellsworth killed."

Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, a friend of Abraham Lincoln and the commander of the New York Fire Zouaves, was anxious to be the first to invade the South. On May 24, 1861, the day after Virginia seceded, Ellsworth led his men, uncontested, down the streets of Alexandria. He sent some of his men to take the railroad station while he and a few others went to secure the telegraph office. On the way, he noticed a Confederate flag atop the Marshall House Inn. Ellsworth and four others quickly ascended the stairs; Ellsworth cut down the flag and was on the way down the stairs when the proprietor, James T. Jackson, killed him with a shotgun blast to the chest. Private Brownell immediately killed the innkeeper. After the war, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Light toning and foxing throughout. Slightly uneven edges. Minor silvering, else very good.
