    Description

Mary E. Walker Cabinet Card and Clipped Signature. The cabinet card (4.25" x 6.5") features Walker in men's clothing with her Medal of Honor pinned to her lapel. The reverse contains the remnants of a few paper labels. The clipped signature (5.25" x 2.25") reads, "Yours in the name of justice / Mary E. Walker, M.D." Very clean. Dr. Walker's life included a number of firsts, including the first woman to be awarded the Medal of Honor and the first U.S. Army military surgeon. She was an ardent abolitionist, feminist, and prohibitionist, as well as a Union spy arrested by Confederates in August 1864.
