Martin Luther King, Jr. Assassination Press Photographs (4).
    All measuring approximately 10" x 8"
    Memphis; circa April 4, 1968

The photographs, taken by Joseph Louw, show the moments leading up to and after the assassin's bullet hit Martin Luther King, Jr. The first, dated April 3, 1968, shows King standing in approximately the same spot where he was shot, alongside Jesse Jackson, Rev. Abernathy, and an unidentified colleague. The second was taken just after King was shot, with his aides grouped around him and pointing towards where they believed the shot to have come from. This photograph was published in Life Magazine on April 8, 1968. The third depicts the mortally wounded King being taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Memphis. The final picture shows the Lorraine Hotel-Motel Assassination Scene from across the courtyard, with the fatal spot circled.

King had travelled to Memphis to support of the city's striking sanitation workers, and gave his famous "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech at the Mason Temple. There had been a bomb threat, which delayed King's flight, and he referenced the threat and potential attempts on his life in his speech. King later checking into the Lorraine Motel, where he was staying with Reverend Ralph Abernathy and others. The next evening, around 6:00 pm, he went out onto the balcony to speak with musician Ben Branch, when he was struck by a single bullet. His friends, including Abernathy, Jesse Jackson, and Andrew Young, rushed to his aid, and King was taken to the hospital. Tragically, despite emergency surgery, he was pronounced dead at 7:05 pm.

Condition: There is light soiling and wear at the edges and corners of the photographs. Some uneven edges. There is tape residue and a small amount of paper loss on the picture of King with his aides. Overall, very good.
