    Description

    Marion Post Wolcott (American, 1910-1990).
Waiting in Marcella Plantation Store to be Paid Off for Picking Cotton. Mileston, Miss., 1939
    Gelatin silver print, printed later
    11" x 14"
    Mileston, Mississippi; 1939

Signed, titled, and dated in pencil on verso. A candid shot of a group of young men waiting at the plantation after having delivered their picked cotton.

Marion Post Wolcott was born in New Jersey but studied in Europe with her sister when the Great Depression struck. When Nazism took hold in Vienna, the two girls were forced to return to America, and Marion became involved in the anti-fascist movement along with her photography. She soon caught the attention of Roy Stryker, the head of the Farm Security Administration (FSA), and was hired almost immediately. Her work with the FSA focused on the poverty within the country, but she was also able to find moments of levity amidst the suffering.

    Condition: Excellent condition.
