    Description

Low Dog: A Scarce Early D. F. Barry Cabinet Photo of a Prominent Participant in the Battle of Little Big Horn. A renowned Oglala warrior, Low Dog was made a war chief at the age of 14. A prominent leader in the fight against Custer, he was the source of the quote often attributed to Sitting Bull: "This is a good day to die. Follow me."

Low Dog surrendered in 1881 and lived out his days at Standing Rock. In an August 18, 1881 interview in the "Leavenworth Weekly Times," he declared: "At last I saw that if I wished to good to my nation, I would have to do it by wise thinking and not so much fighting. Now I want to learn the white man's way, for I see that he is stronger than we are...."

Possibly Low Dog's pacification was not complete, however. A period pencil notation on verso reads: "Worst Sioux ever known. Murdered mail carrier hit [sic] Poplar Creek & Wolf Point, Montana 1888-tortured him." 4.25" x 6.5", excellent condition.
