Little Big Horn: A Large Barry Photo of Custer Monument with Grave Markers in Foreground, with Inset Photo of 2nd Lieutenant James G. Sturgis. Only a year out of West Point, Sturgis was with Company E in Custer's troop, and perished in the battle. His father was Colonel Samuel Davis Sturgis, who was technically the Commander of the 7th at the time of the battle. Colonel Sturgis was away on recruiting duty at the time of the Little Big Horn Campaign.

As was the case with many of the mutilated bodies, that of Lieutenant Sturgis was never identified, and is presumed buried in the mass grave by the monument. When Sturgis's distraught mother visited the battlefield, she begged to be shown the spot where her son died, and sympathetic troopers created a phony grave marker to accommodate her request.

Photo itself is 6.5" x 8.5" and has Barry markings on both sides. Aside from being somewhat light, it is in very good condition, as is the original marked Barry mount, except that the cover and flaps are separated.
