    Description

Joseph Hooker Signed Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", a bust portrait in uniform, with a Brady, New York backstamp on verso. Signed below the image: "Joseph Hooker Maj Genls Vols."

Joseph Hooker (1814-1879) was an able, albeit unpopular Union general during the Civil War. Though he served with some distinction, his legacy was tarnished by accusations of excessive drinking and womanizing. Hooker was replaced by George Meade as commander of the Army of the Potomac on June 28, 1863, just three days before the Battle of Gettysburg. He returned to combat in November 1863 and won key victories during the Chattanooga Campaign. He later fought under Sherman in the Western Theater. After Lincoln's death, Hooker led the funeral procession in Springfield on May 4, 1865. He formerly retired from the U.S. Army in 1868.

Condition: Light edge toning and further uneven toning throughout. Light soiling and minor wear to corners. Boldly signed.
