    Description

Joseph Hooker Carte de Visite Signed "Joseph Hooker Maj Genl." 2.5" x 4", with a Brady's, Washington, D.C. imprint on verso. A bust portrait of "Fighting Joe", seen in his major general uniform. Joseph Hooker (1814-1879) was an able, albeit unpopular Union general during the Civil War. Though he served with some distinction, his legacy was tarnished by accusations of excessive drinking and womanizing. Hooker was replaced by George Meade as commander of the Army of the Potomac on June 28, 1863, just three days before the Battle of Gettysburg. Hooker returned to combat in November 1863 and won key victories during the Chattanooga Campaign. He later fought under Sherman in the Western Theater. After Lincoln's death, Hooker led the funeral procession in Springfield on May 4, 1865. He formerly retired from the U.S. Army in 1868. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Light uneven toning throughout, with minor soiling at the corners on verso. Otherwise very good with a bold signature.
