John A. Scholten Albumen Photograph of George Armstrong Custer in Buckskins. Taken in 1872, Custer is featured in a 4.25" x 5.5" full length studio portrait wearing fringed buckskins, a scarf casually tied around his neck, and a fur cap upon his head. Standing in front of a wilderness backdrop, he is casually leaning his left arm on entwined pieces of wood; his left foot is propped up on a log. In his right hand, he holds the barrel of his rifle. The image is affixed to a 6" x 9.5" mount for St. Louis photographer John A. Scholten. Scholten's monogram appears near the lower edge. Light toning is seen at the edges. A piece of tissue paper has been tipped onto the right edge to protect the photograph.

This image is one of several taken that day during the visit of Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich of Russia, the son of Czar Alexander II, who was visiting the United States. The Grand Duke was being treated to a buffalo hunt, led by Custer, for his twenty-second birthday. At the end of the week-long hunt, known today as the Great Royal Buffalo Hunt, the two men, who became close friends, posed for several photographs for John Scholten.
