    Description

Jefferson Davis Cabinet Card Signed "Jeffer. Davis." 4.25" x 6.5", published by Bendann Brothers, Baltimore. Taken circa 1867, featuring the former Confederate president seated and resting his left arm on a table with an open book. Davis is dressed in a dark vest, trousers, and long jacket. The photograph was likely taken shortly after Davis's release from being imprisoned at Fortress Monroe.

After the Civil War, Davis was imprisoned for treason for two years. After his release, he and his family went to Canada and from there sailed to the United Kingdom on July 25, 1868. His son, William, contracted typhoid fever a few months after they arrived, and the family had to remain in Waterloo while he recovered. Finally, in January 1869, the Davis family moved to London, where Jefferson looked for work as well as a way to return to the United States (Andrew Johnson granted him a pardon on December 25, 1868). Davis ultimately did return to the U.S., becoming the president of the Carolina Life Insurance Company. He later published The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government in 1881. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Toned throughout, with some minor wear at the corners. Creasing and small tearing at the top two corners of the albumen. Boldly signed by Davis. On verso is a small pencil notation. Overall good.
